Hooray us! We just applied for our first grant. What does a steaming pile of poo have going for it that makes it grant worthy, you ask? Well that steam means heat and if you can capture that heat, you’re off to a great start for creating a closed loop, zero waste heat system. We applied for the resources to build just exactly that for our chicken coops, greenhouses, and barn for next winter. Why not? We have the poop and bales of hay, with some other resources and effort, next winter we could be producing all the warmth we need without depending on electricity. Want to know more? LLR’s Healthy Relationships Initiative has been developed to help people create and sustain happy, healthy, and safe relationships; personally, professionally, and societally.

Participants in our Healthy Relationships Initiative will develop an understanding of themselves while cultivating the skills necessary to successfully relate to others in a wide variety of settings.

Mastery in this domain includes developing an authentic sense of self and emotions, the ability to deploy the skills necessary to prevent/mitigate relationship distress, and the ability to foster and maintain healthy, mutually beneficial relationships.

How:

  • Social and emotional learning opportunities for the development of healthy and safe relationships.
  • Cultivating an embodied experience of the intra and interpersonal competencies necessary for fostering and maintaining healthy and mutually beneficial relationships.  
  • Engendering the skills of self-awareness, self-regulation, self-advocacy, situational awareness, social/cultural awareness, healthy boundaries, and bystander empowerment and education.
  • Providing supportive resources for dating violence prevention and relationship distress

Why and What:

We are currently, in modern society, experiencing a mental health crisis of epic proportion. Included in the rising statistics representative of this fact are those statistics concerned with relationship aggression and violence.  

Relationship violence has a profound impact on all other aspects of life, individually and communally. Unhealthy relationship dynamics can and do start early and last a lifetime if action is not taken. Individuals who experience relationship violence or distress are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, engage in antisocial or risky behavior, contemplate suicide or violence.

By supporting the development of healthy, respectful, and safe/nonviolent relationships, LLR intends to increase the potential for more resilient individuals, families, and communities.

At LLR we recognize that through the cultivation of intra and interpersonal competencies and activities that assist in the development of healthy relationship dynamics. Our healthy relationship programming includes but is not limited to emphasis on:

INTRAPERSONAL COMPETENCIES

Self-Awareness:

Knowing who you are. The ability to accurately recognize and understand your own emotions and behaviors. Including the ability to accurately identify and deploy the necessary skill, knowledge, value and responsibility for congruent emotional/behavioral response to situations.

This also includes being aware of the effect of your own actions, moods, and emotions on others.

Self-Regulation:

Self-control and the ability to manage emotions, desires, and behaviors in order to reach a positive outcome.

Self-Advocacy:

The ability to effectively communicate, convey, negotiate, or assert one's own interests, desires, needs, and rights.

Self-Motivation:

The ability to set and achieve goals, feel more fulfilled, and improve overall quality of life.

Self-Accountability:

Takes responsibility and ownership for decisions, actions and results…both positive and negative outcomes.

Recognizing that all kinds of healthy relationships are important, we include intrapersonal competencies necessary for healthy engagement in a variety of settings:

Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: The ability to exercise sound reasoning to analyze issues, make decisions, and overcome problems. You are able to obtain, interpret, and use knowledge, facts, and data in this process, and even may demonstrate originality and inventiveness.

Oral/Written Communications: The ability to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in written and oral forms to persons inside and outside of the organization. You have public speaking skills; are able to express ideas to others; and can write/edit memos, letters, and complex technical reports clearly and effectively.

Teamwork/Collaboration: The ability to build collaborative relationships with classmates and instructors (translating professionally to colleagues and consumers). You are able to work within a team structure, can negotiate and manage conflict, and can flow easily between following and leading.  

Digital Technology: The ability to leverage existing digital technologies ethically and efficiently to solve problems, complete tasks, and accomplish goals. You demonstrate effective adaptability to new and emerging technologies.

Leadership: The ability to leverage the strengths of others to achieve common goals and use interpersonal skills to coach and develop others. You are able to assess and manage your emotions and those of others; use empathetic skills to guide and motivate; and organize, prioritize, and delegate work.

Professionalism/Work Ethic: The ability to demonstrate personal accountability and effective work habits, e.g., punctuality, working productively with others, and time workload management, and understand the impact of non-verbal communication on professional work image. You demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior, act responsibly with the interests of the larger community in mind and are able to learn from your mistakes.

Career Management: The ability to identify and articulate your skills, strengths, knowledge, and experiences relevant to the position desired and career goals and identify areas necessary for professional growth. You are able to navigate and explore job options, understand and take the steps necessary to pursue opportunities, and understand how to self-advocate for opportunities in the workplace.

Global/Intercultural Fluency: The ability to value, respect, and learn from diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, and religions. You demonstrate openness, inclusiveness, sensitivity, and the ability to interact respectfully with all people and understand individuals’ differences.
